How the brick calculation works

The calculator first removes openings from the wall area, estimates bricks from the modular brick face including the mortar joint, adjusts for wall thickness, then adds your waste allowance.

1. Net wall area
A = (W × H) − openings
2. Brick quantity
N ≈ A ÷ [(L + J)(Hᵦ + J)] × (T ÷ B)
3. Order quantity
Norder = ceil[N × (1 + waste%)]
Worked example. A 5 m × 3 m wall using 190 × 90 × 90 mm bricks with a 10 mm joint and 5% waste requires about 750 bricks before waste and 788 bricks to order.

Brick dimensions vary by country and manufacturer. Always use the actual dimensions specified for your project.

Brick calculator FAQ

How much waste should I add for bricks?

A common estimating allowance is about 5–10%, but cuts, breakage, complex geometry and brick availability can justify a higher allowance.

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?

Yes. Add the combined area of all openings to the Total openings area field. The calculator subtracts it from the gross wall area.

How is mortar estimated?

Wet mortar is approximated as masonry wall volume minus the solid volume of the bricks. Cement and sand are then estimated from the selected mortar mix.

Can I use a different mortar mix?

Yes. Change the Cement ratio and Sand ratio fields. The default is 1:4.

Is this suitable for final purchasing?

Use it for quantity planning and cross-checking. Final orders should follow the drawings, specifications, supplier units, bond pattern and site conditions.
